Swindon Talking Newspapers

Summary: Development of charity website while following requirements of the charity and the accessibility guidelines necessary for a website to support partially-sighted users.

Swindon Talking Newspaper Association The weekly Swindon < District Talking Newspaper (STAN) gives blind, visually impaired and listeners with other disabilities the independent means of keeping in touch with what's going on in the local community.

Developing a website for Swindon Talking Newspapers was an interesting project to work on as there were a number of accessibility requirements that had to be met so that the website could be read by full-sighted, partially sighted and blind people using screen reading software. This meant that careful attention had to be paid towards layout design, colour schemes and overall navigation. After consultation with the charity and content had been agreed, I was able to produce the website within a week, due to the basic nature of the page formatting. The website design was developed after watching videos on web accessibility for visually impaired users and a number of tests using website accessibility checking software. The charity continues to use the design and now maintains the website internally, adjusting the content as they feel necessary.
